Safety Guidelines for the Application, Installation and Maintenance of Solid State Controls (Publication SGI-1.1 available from your local Rockwell Automation sales office or online at http://www.ab.com/manuals/gi) describes some important differences between solid state equipment and hard-wired electromechanical devices. Because of this difference, and also because of the wide variety of uses for solid state equipment, all persons responsible for applying this equipment must satisfy themselves that each intended application of this equipment is acceptable. In no event will Rockwell Automation, Inc. be responsible or liable for indirect or consequential damages resulting from the use or application of this equipment. The examples and diagrams in this manual are included solely for illustrative purposes. Because of the many variables and requirements associated with any particular installation, Rockwell Automation, Inc. cannot assume responsibility or liability for actual use based on the examples and diagrams. No patent liability is assumed by Rockwell Automation, Inc. with respect to use of information, circuits, equipment, or software described in this manual.Reproduction of the contents of this manual, in whole or in part, without written permission of Rockwell Automation, Inc. is prohibited.Throughout this manual, when necessary we use notes to make you aware of safety considerations.WARNINGIdentifies information about practices or circumstances that can cause an explosion in a hazardous environment, which may lead to personal injury or death, property damage, or economic loss.IMPORTANTIdentifies information that is critical for successful application and understanding of the product.ATTENTIONIdentifies information about practices or circumstances that can lead to personal injury or death, property damage, or economic loss. Attentions help you:•identify a hazard•avoid a hazard•recognize the consequenceATTENTIONPersonnel responsible for the application of GuardLogix Controller-based safety systems shall be aware of the safety requirements in the application of the system and shall be trained in using the system.GuardLogix Controllers 3Publication 1756-IN045A-EN-P - December 2004Prevent Electrostatic DischargeCompactFlash CardPrepare the ChassisBefore you install a controller, follow these preliminary steps:1.Install a ControlLogix chassis (catalog number 1756-A4, -A7, -A10, or -A17 Series B) according to the ControlLogix Chassis Installation Instructions, publication 1756-IN080.2.Install one of the following ControlLogix power supplies according to the corresponding installation instructions:ATTENTIONThis equipment is sensitive to electrostatic discharge, which can cause internal damage and affect normal operation. Follow these guidelines when you handle this equipment:•Touch a grounded object to discharge potential static.•Wear an approved grounding wriststrap.•Do not touch connectors or pins on component boards.•Do not touch circuit components inside the equipment.•If available, use a static-safe workstation.•When not in use, store the equipment in appropriate static-safe packaging.WARNINGAlthough CompactFlash is not currently supported, if you insert or remove a CompactFlash card while host power is on, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an explosion in hazardous location installations. Be sure that power is removed or the area is nonhaz-ardous before proceeding. For this power supply:Follow the instructions in this publication:1756-PA72 ControlLogix Power Supplies Installation Instructions, publication 1756-IN078.1756-PB721756-PA75ControlLogix Power Supplies Installation Instructions, publication 1756-IN596.1756-PB751756-PA75R(1)(1)A 1756-PSCA or 1756-PSCA2 Series A redundant power supply chassis adapter is required for use with redundant power supplies. Refer to ControlLogix Redundant Power Supplies Chassis Adapter Module Installation Instructions, publication 1756-IN574.ControlLogix Redundant Power Supplies Installation Instructions, publication 1756-IN573.1756-PB75R(1)4 GuardLogix ControllersPublication 1756-IN045A-EN-P - December 2004Make Sure that You Have All the ComponentsA key and the 1756-BA2 battery ship with the 1756-L6xS controller, while the 1756-LSP ships with the 1756-BA2.If you want to connect a device to the serial port of the controller (e.g., connect a computer to the controller), use a 1756-CP3 serial cable.Connect the BatteryTo maintain the memory of the controller while the controller is without power, connect a battery. Follow the procedure on page 5 for both the 1756-L6xS and 1756-LSP.IMPORTANTYou must use a 1756-L6xS primary controller and a 1756-LSP safety partner to achieve SIL 3/CAT. 4.WARNINGWhen you connect or disconnect the battery an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an explosion in hazardous location installations. Be sure that power is removed or the area is nonhazardous before proceeding. For safety information on the handling of lithium batteries, including handling and disposal of leaking batteries, see Guidelines for Handling Lithium Batteries, publication AG 5-4.ATTENTIONStore batteries in a cool, dry environment. We recommend 25°C with 40% to 60% relative humidity. You may store batteries for up to 30 days between -45° to 85°C, such as during transportation. To avoid possible leakage, do not store batteries above 60°C for more than 30 days.ATTENTIONConnect only a 1756-BA2 battery to the controller. If you connect a different battery, you may damage the controller.GuardLogix Controllers 5Publication 1756-IN045A-EN-P - December 2004To install a new 1756-BA2 battery:1.Insert the battery as shown.2.Connect the battery: + Red - Black3.Write the date you installed the battery on the battery label and attach the label to the inside of the controller door.ATTENTIONTo prevent possible battery leakage, even if the BAT LED is off, replace a 1756-BA2 battery according to the following schedule:DATE123If the temperature 2.54 cm (1 in.) below the chassis is:Replace the battery within:0° to 35° C (32 to 95°F)No replacement is required until the BAT LED turns on.36° to 40°C (96 to 104°F)3 years41° to 45°C (105 to 113°F)2 years46° to 50°C (114 to 122°F)16 months51° to 55°C (123 to 131°F)11 months56° to 60°C (132 to 140°F)8 months
